5 Things You Need To Know Before Buying a Residential Cruise Residence
After cruising for over 15 years and following the Residential Cruise industry for many of those years, I've compiled a short list of must-knows before buying a Residential Cruise residence.
What I Wish Someone Had Told Me
These are the five things that separate informed buyers from those who learn the hard way. I'm sharing the highlights here — the full guide goes much deeper.
Not Every 'Residential Cruise' Is Legitimate
The market is flooded with bold promises — some operators don't even have a ship yet. Learn how to tell real projects from paper dreams.
The Real Cost Goes Far Beyond the Sticker Price
Ownership price is just the start. Monthly fees, port charges, and hidden costs can dramatically change the equation.
Ownership Structures Vary Wildly
Full ownership, 5-year terms, lifetime access, fractional — each model has completely different rights, risks, and exit options.
The Itinerary Is Everything (And Often Overlooked)
Where does the ship actually go? How long in port? Some routes are breathtaking — others will leave you stuck in the same loop.
Community Makes or Breaks the Experience
You're not just buying a cabin — you're choosing your neighbors for years. The culture onboard matters more than most people think.

My Honest Take on Avora Residences
I've been following residential cruise lines for years, and Avora Residences is the one I keep coming back to. Not because they're paying me to say that — they're not — but because the fundamentals are genuinely strong.
They've acquired the former Regent Seven Seas Navigator — a ship with a proven track record of luxury cruising and a near 1-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio. That's not a promise on a brochure. That ship exists. It's real. And it has decades of service history backing it up.
What sets Avora apart from many of the newer concepts is that they're not asking you to bet on a rendering or a shipyard contract that might slip. The ship is acquired, being refitted, and targeting a 2028 launch. In an industry where some operators have been “coming soon” for years, that matters.
The suites themselves are impressive — 7 categories ranging from 300 to over 1,100 sq ft, with marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, and 24/7 room service included across the board. If you're looking for hotel-level luxury in a residential setting, this is currently the strongest contender I've seen.
That said — it's still a pre-launch project, and I always recommend doing thorough due diligence before committing to any residential cruise. Happy to chat if you want an honest second opinion.

Peter
Founder, CruiseResidence

“I've spent the past 15 years cruising the world. What began simply as a passion for travel slowly turned into something more.”
Along the way, I started noticing a new and fascinating part of the industry beginning to emerge: residential cruising. The idea that you could own a home on a ship and travel the world permanently captivated me.
As I looked deeper into the different programs being developed around the world, I realized something quickly. The information was scattered, often unclear, and very difficult to compare.
That's what inspired me to create CruiseResidence — an independent platform to give people clear visibility into the growing world of residential cruise lines. No sales pitch. No affiliate bias. Just honest, practical information from someone who's actually lived this lifestyle.
This guide distills everything I've learned into the five most critical things you need to know before putting down a deposit. I wrote it because too many people are making six-figure decisions based on beautiful brochures and compelling sales calls — without the full picture.
I hope it helps you make a truly informed decision.
